Nintendo Switch Is The Fastest-Selling Console In The U.S.

Nintendo has been doing pretty well for itself in the past 10 months. After the mammoth failure that was the Wii U, many had started to rule out Nintendo as a real contender in the console space. However, with the Switch, they’ve managed to exceed all kinds of expectations, selling around 10 million consoles since its launch, far exceeding its forecast.

Now, Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling console in United States history. Since its March 3, 2017 launch, the system has sold over 4.8 million units, according to the Big N. This surpasses the performances of Nintendo’s most popular system, the Wii.

“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”

So what has contributed to these strong sales figures? For starters, the fact that the Switch doubles as both a home console and handheld console certainly helps, and when it comes to ports, many are willing to take the hit in graphic prowess in order to take their experiences on the road.

Also, we can’t discount the importance of first-party titles Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2 — and the idea of them all launching within the console’s first year is absolutely insane.

To date, the console has more than 300 games from third-party developers, and given its success, developers are now scrambling to bring more support to the console. Will it be enough to help stave off the drought of third-party games that Nintendo seems to face every other console generation? We hope so.
