Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to tense scenes and good dialogue. The famed director recently gave his thoughts on a particular scene from the Todd Phillips’ directed Joker. The talk show scene where Joker shoots Robert DeNiro’s Murray Franklin on television. You can check out what Tarantino had to say while appearing on The Playlist below.
“The subversion on a massive level, the thing that’s profound is this: It’s not just suspenseful, it’s not just riveting and exciting, the director subverts the audience because the Joker is a f***ing nut. Robert De Niro’s talk show character is not a movie villain. He seems like an asshole, but he’s not more of an assh*le than David Letterman. He’s just an assh*le comedian, talk show guy. He’s not a movie villain. He doesn’t deserve to die.”

First off, is that a widely held opinion on Letterman? He was never my favorite late-night guy, but I never got that sort of vibe from him. Anyway, Tarantino is correct, Murray didn’t deserve to die. And the fact that he does is quite shocking, even though in the back of our minds, I think most of us knew it was going to happen.
Joker was a different, yet interesting take on the character. I wasn’t sure how they would pull of a movie about Joker, without Batman. I also said thr same thing about a Batman-less television series in Gotham. Both worked out to varying degrees for different people.
