Robert Kirkman Plans To Keep Apocalypse Origin A Secret

While AMC’s The Walking Dead isn’t what it used to be, the show still garners a good number of viewers. One of the biggest unknowns in the story is how the word ended up this way, what was it that caused the virus that turned most into zombies and left the world with a human population of around 1.5 million people.

The cause of this has never been revealed, and it is likely to stay that way according to comic book and show creator, Robert Kirkman. During a Q&A session on Tumblr, Kirkman says that the cause of the apocalypse doesn’t really matter and it wouldn’t change the story much, so fans will likely never know:

“I know… but it’s a crazy sci-fi thing that would make the story all that much weirder. Maybe years after it’s all over I’ll just casually mention it in an interview. That seems like a very J.K. Rowling thing to do. It couldn’t be less important to the story and the lives of these characters. It would be completely out of place in the story. Honestly if a scientist from Washington came to the character and told them what happened the characters would just shrug and say ‘Oh… okay…’ it wouldn’t change their lives at all… and… I’ve said too much.”

As I’ve said before, I have so much time invested in the show, that I will see it through, despite the shortcomings in recent seasons. As for the reveal of what caused the apocalypse, I think too much time has passed anyway, no one really cares what happened anymore. Perhaps a Season 1 reveal would have been appropriate, but now fans just want great television again, while the show is still pretty good, it’s no longer great.
