In 2009 Paramount Pictures released their first film based on the classic Hasbro G.I. Joe action figures that were so popular in the 80’s titled G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra directed by Stephen Sommers. Then a sequel was made in 2013 titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Since then Paramount and Hasbro have been looking for a new spin for the franchise and it looks like they have found their spin in the popular character Snake Eyes.
According to Variety, Robert Schwentke is in early talks to direct Paramount’s G.I. Joe spin off film, Snake Eyes. This film is based on a script penned by Evan Spiliotopoulos who also wrote Beauty and the Beast as well as The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Brian Goldner is on board as well to produce.
This will be Snake Eyes third appearance in the franchise. He first appeared as one of the original figures in the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy line back in 1982. He is a silent ninja commando that wears all black, never revealing his identity and never speaking. He has often carried out solo missions and has a pet wolf named Timber. His arch nemesis is a ninja named Storm Shadow, who is also his blood brother. An interesting fact about his classic all black costume is that it was designed this way in order to save Hasbro Money as the plastic he was made out of was black so there was no paint applied for details.
Schwentke is probably best known for his work on RED starring Bruce Willis. Also he directed the sequels for the Divergent franchise Insurgent and Allegiant. Recently he directed the German World War II thrilled The Captain, a film for which he received critical acclaim.
