Salazar Corners Jack Sparrow In New Pirates Clip
Fans are one week away from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth (and supposed final) adventure of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and with him came a new clip of the upcoming film. The clip gives us our first look at direct interaction between Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow and Javier Bardem’s Captain Salazar.
Jack Sparrow’s past has once again come back to haunt him as the scene shows the Captain, along with Henry (Brenten Thwaites) and Carina (Kaya Scodelario), as they are confronted on a beach by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew of ghost pirates.
We learn that the ghost pirates cannot step on land, as one of them disintegrates as the tide moves back into the ocean. Relieved by this, Sparrow stands up and is told by Salazar that he will pay for what he did and that Salazar would be waiting for him. The clip ends with Henry chasing Carina as she runs off into the jungle and Jack scurrying away muttering, “Why would he be waiting for me?†Sparrow seems genuinely confused by Salazar’s threats, but as one of the film’s trailers shows, Sparrow is at least indirectly responsible for the fate that Salazar endured.
A flashback scene in the trailer shows a young Captain Salazar as he navigates through a field of damaged pirate ships in the aftermath of a gruesome battle. As Salazar narrates the scene, he can be seen peering through an eyepiece at a barefaced Jack Sparrow. In an attempt to escape, Sparrow sails into the Devil’s Triangle, Salazar gives him men orders to follow him. Salazar’s boat then crashes, causing an explosion and the next time we see Salazar he is being brought back to life underwater.
Sparrow may be completely unaware as to the full ramifications of this long ago incident, and if this be the case, would explain his bewilderment as to who Salazar is in the beach clip. Judging by Sparrow’s age in the flashback this incident could have happened well over 20 years ago and Sparrow may simply not recognize Salazar.
The movie really is shaping up to be the best outing since Curse of the Black Pearl. There is also something to be said for having Javier Bardem play the villain while sporting an unusual hairstyle, as this has worked out well in the past.
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and comes from a screenplay by Jess Nathanson.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens May 26 2017.
