SDCC Home Will Have To Plenty To Offer Even Without Marvel & DC

SDCC at Home is approaching (July 23-25th) and hopefully, this will be the last virtual convention the famed company will have to go through.  While the organizers of SDCC wished they could host the convention in person, the pandemic restrictions wouldn’t allow it to happen. Some fans of SDCC became nervous last night after Deadline confirmed that Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Films would be skipping this year’s SDCC at Home.

This does not come as much of a surprise since Disney has been shifting more of these big Marvel panels to its D23 convention.  Warner Bros. created its own online convention last year with DC Fandome that went over very well and is scheduled again later this year. Even before the pandemic, the two studios started to shift their panels away from the big convention so they didn’t have to share the spotlight of the weekend.  With the advancement of the internet and technology Marvel, DC, and even Star Wars have been able to highlight their big announcements on their own terms.

While Hall H is considered one of the biggest spectacles in convention history and has hosted some of the most memorable panels in film history. Even without Marvel or DC films, there is still plenty of upcoming projects that can hold Hall H.  This will be an opportunity for other film studios like Amazon, Netflix, Paramount to showcase their projects without being overshadowed by Marvel and DC. Let’s not forget one of the biggest announcements at the last live SDCC was the surprise announcement of Top Gun 2 by Tom Cruise.

The convention will also highlight the other things like Cosplay, Book Clubs, Artist Alley, and Collectibles that make SDCC amazing!

On a positive note, SDCC is organizing a smaller version of its convention called SDCC Special Edition for Thanksgiving weekend.  This will give an opportunity for comic book exhibitors to get some face-to-face interaction with comic book enthusiasts. You can find more information about SDCC at Home and SDCC Special Edition here.
