The show revivals continue as arguably the first to lead us into this golden age of television we live in, The Sopranos, will now be revived in the form of a prequel movie, as show creator David Chase has sold his script to Lionsgate. The film will be set during the 1960s and deal with the conflict between Italian and African Americans, and has a working title of The Many Saints of Newark.
Warner Brothers chairman Toby Emmerich:
“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film.”
I have always loved the show and welcome this film with open arms, but it is disappointing that this won’t be another television series. It would seem as there is enough there for seasons of content, and we all know television is the best platform to tell a story. Also worth mentioning is that characters or relatives of characters from the show will be in the film, though no specifics were given.
The Sopranos was groundbreaking for its time and ushered in the age of wonderful stories we are treated to today. The controversial ending of The Sopranos was very divisive among fans, but hasn’t seemed to hurt the legacy of the show overall.
