A release date has been revealed for both the digital and physical releases of Superman, the first DCU film. Reports had suggested the end of the month was likely for a digital release, as the film is still pulling in $1M a day domestically in theatres. However, to everyone’s surprise James Gunn has revealed the digital release of Superman is this Friday, August 15.
#Superman is coming to your homes this Friday, 8/15. Available now for pre-order. Or catch it while it's still in theaters! pic.twitter.com/xziRucg3xG

This is incredibly quick and estimates of the movie making $620M+ now look likely off. The movie may be pulling in around $1M a day and has reached $600M, but that will surely stop come Friday? I mean a family can now just rent it and stay in instead.
As for the physical release date, that’s not till September 23, so it’ll be a while before you can pick up the UHD premium experience.
WB did similar with A Minecraft Movie and stopped the picture maybe hitting the $1B mark. However, they must have reason to expect the home digital sales to be a strong profit centre for them.

This is the modern trend and perhaps indicate some studios know their market. That getting the film onto Digital sales actually brings in customers who just don’t like going to theatres but want to watch newer movies. Whereas, other studios are wondering why the box office hasn’t come back since COVID. I think society has simply shifted.
Cinema is still the premium experience, but it’s not what everyone loves. Home rental before physical release is just another market and one where they don’t share the profits with theatres. Then, for the collectors and enthusiasts who want the best home experience, you have Blu-ray and UHD. They still sell DVD’s as well, but not sure who is still watching them at this point?
What do you think of Superman‘s digital and physical release dates? are you surprised the digital release is just this Friday? Thoughts below.
