Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot Gets Its Directors — Stop Rebooting Leatherface!

I love horror films. I usually have a soft spot for originals, but every now and then a remake or reboot comes along and does a decent job. sometimes their really good at retelling the original with a twist like A Nightmare on Elm Street, other times they’re really good horror films that just share the same name as an original like Evil Dead. There comes a point though (like Halloween or  Friday the 13th) where you’ve tried enough times to reboot a film and you should just leave it dead. There has been a recent trend of rebooting series with direct sequels to the original film (again, like Halloween). However, it looks like the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre will be a traditional reboot, and I don’t care for that.

Legendary Pictures is in the process of bringing Leatherface and company to the modern world, unlike the 2003 remake which kept a 1970s setting. Now they’ve hired the directing duo of Ryan and Andy Tohill. The Tohill’s first film, The Dig, hit back in 2018 and won several European awards. What exactly they plan to do with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains to be seen, but I honestly don’t want to see it.

The 2003 remake, which was produced by Michael Bay, was enjoyable. It was a brutal and mostly faithful retelling of Hooper’s 1974 original. It’s been done already! There was a “direct” sequel to the original film in the form of Texas Chainsaw 3D so even the new Halloween method has been done. It’s time to leave this franchise alone!

One of the film’s producers, Fede Alvarez, told Variety:

“The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want. It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.”

Okay… sounds good on the surface, but we already had that… twice! As annoying as it is for every studio to be looking for multi-film franchises, it makes sense. Remakes provide studios with built-in ideas, scripts, storyboards, and provide a fan base… usually. What fans really want, or at least this one, is something new! If a film has already been remade, don’t do it again. The “let’s ignore other sequels and make direct sequels to the originals with original cast” thing is okay, but for this franchise that too has been done. There’s nothing left here.

Maybe the film will be good, maybe it won’t. One thing for sure is, we need a new era of horror icons. We need new Freddys, Michaels, Jasons, and Leatherfaces. What do you think? Do you want to see this reboot? Let us know in the comments below!
