The Movie Industry Will ‘Look Different’ Following The Coronavirus Pandemic, Says Jason Blum

Right now, the entire world is still in the midst of the unprecedented COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Industries all around the world have had to adapt to unreal circumstances. We’ve seen studios push movies back to the small screen much sooner than anticipated. Onward, The Hunt, and The Invisible Man are all films that are now available to watch whenever viewers want to see them — and all were available in theaters mere weeks ago. Clearly, this is a time of change and potential upheaval of the industry. But will it actually take root?

Jason Blum of Blumhouse productions seems to think so. If you somehow don’t know, Blum is the producer of such hit films as Get Out and The Invisible Man. His production company has made a name for itself over the years as a maker of high-concept, low-budget features. As a result, these films have managed to stay relevant and in theaters amid the world of gargantuan blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking with Ben Shapiro (yes, that Ben Shapiro), Blum spoke to the idea of studios having to compete with streamers.

“I think it’s not realistic to think all the studios are going to wait four months before they put a movie at home. They just can’t compete, they’re going to have to compete with Amazon and Netflix and Apple in a different way. So I think that’s changing.”

At the time of this recording, it’s clear the COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t yet taken off as it has now, and as such, The Hunt (one of his movies) hadn’t likely been pushed to VOD just yet. Either way, Blum really thinks that things will be changing quite after it dies down.

“There’re going to be shifts. The consumer is going to be more used to staying at home. Something is going to give, there has to be something that’s going to happen post-corona…The movie business will look different after the coronavirus.”

You can check out the entire 50-minute interview, which is a rare reasonable conversation between a liberal and conservative you’ll find these days. It’s definitely worth a watch.

But what do you think? Do you see the industry transforming following the coronavirus pandemic?
