The New Mutants: Rosario Dawson In Talks To Join X-Men Spinoff?

Right now, the X-Men Cinematic Universe is at a bit of a crossroads. After concluding the secondary trilogy of their series with X-Men: Apocalypse last year, they were left with countless opportunities. No longer are they restricted to making standard superhero films. Last year’s Deadpool and this year’s Logan have proven that the only constraints they have are the constraints they put on themselves. So long as the films are strong, audiences have proven they are willing to pay their ticket to see the work they put out.

It seems to us that they’re continuing with this trend of the unexpected. Earlier today, we reported on the fact that one of the upcoming X-Men spinoffs, The New Mutants, would be a full-on horror, as opposed to the YA film we were pitched months ago. However, that wasn’t the only interesting piece of news in that report. They also stated that “Unconfirmed chatter has it that Rosario Dawson is currently in talks [to join the film] as well.”

Rosario Dawson, of course, is no stranger to franchises. She currently resides in Marvel’s Netflix universe, having appeared in shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and most recently, Iron Fist. As such, she’s already dabbled in the world of superheroes — probably for longer than most actors, in terms of hours spent at work and on screen. Since that report was published, THR has posted a new story confirming talks, and the film’s director Josh Boone has posted the following picture to his Instagram.

Sounds to us that, yes, Rosario Dawson will indeed likely star in the teen-centric mutant flick. Her role will apparently be that of Doctor Cecilia Reyes, who in addition to being able to put a protective bio-field around herself, serves as a mentor to the younglings that make up the New Mutants.

In a film that will have a good number of younger, lesser known stars, Dawson will be a nice anchor to more mainstream audiences. On a more personal not, I tend to find that Dawson is quite often one of the better things in many of the projects she is a part of, so any opportunity where she’s able to lend her talents is fine by me.
