The Razzies React To The Oscars’ Popular Film Category

By now, you likely have read my opinion on the Oscars adding a potential popular film category. In short, I think it’s a bad idea — not because I don’t want popular films to get recognized, but because I think it’s a copout to actually honoring them with the high honors like Best Picture, Best Director, etc. It encourages pushing those films to the side into their own little corner and artificially alleviates the pressure to actually put in movies people see.

Now, the Razzies have given their opinion about this new category, and they are none too happy about it, as they revealed in a blog update. Here’s what they had to say:

“The Oscars lowering themselves to “honor” popular fare just to get more eyeballs is not conducive to their brand. Everyone depends on Oscar to point out the good stuff that might not otherwise be seen. We sift through bottom-of-the-barrel mindless popular and sometimes unpopular entertainment. The Razzies invite the “dis-honored’ to humble themselves and “own their bad.” That’s our job.”

Snarky little comments aside, it seems like the Razzies believe the Oscars’ job is to point out films that could have missed the attention of the public eye, but is that the case. In the latest episode of Los Fanboys, I expressed my own opinion that the Oscars should NOT be about pointing out little gems but in genuinely recognizing the best in the industry at their craft.

As such, I agree with the Razzies that this is a bad idea…but for a completely different reason. What do you think of the Razzies’ comments? Do you agree with them that opening themselves up to popular film ruins their brand? Let us know down below!
