There Was A Scrapped Batman Beyond Movie That Featured Clint Eastwood As Bruce Wayne

Wow. Forget about Justice League: Mortal and Superman Lives. As it turns out, there was an even cooler DC film in the works back around the year 2000. This film involved everyone’s favorite crotchety Caped Crusader. Except it wasn’t just your standard Batman film. Oh no. This movie would have introduced live-action viewers to Terry McGinnis, who cartoon fans know from the beloved animated series, Batman Beyond.

You read that correctly, around 20 years ago, a Batman Beyond live-action adaptation was in the works. For those unfamiliar, the story took place in a futuristic Gotham. Though Batman was retired, crime itself had not stopped, and it led to the rise of a new hero. Under the guidance of an aging Bruce Wayne, Terry took on the cowl and became the new Caped Crusader…only without a cape.

Speaking on an older episode of Fat Man on Batman, Paul Dini gave some real details. In addition to Remember the Titans helmer Boaz Yakin directing and co-writing, Batman Beyond co-creator Alan Burnett was also co-writing. Though, from the sound of it, it wouldn’t exactly have been a faithful adaptation.

“It was set in Gotham’s future, but it didn’t quite have the fantastic, futuristic edge. It was sort of like an amalgam. There was a little bit of Dark Knight, there was a little bit of contemporary comics and there was Terry [McGinnis] and the suit and everything. It was old Bruce Wayne.”

Additionally, Clint Eastwood could have starred in the role of Bruce Wayne. Considering Eastwood’s filmography and his tendency to play crotchety old men, it would have fit him like a glove.

But, of course, this never happened. And you can’t blame Warner Bros. They had s**t the bed with Batman and Robin, so they were understandably gun-shy about potentially screwing up the Batman brand twice. It took another five years or so before another Batman film took off in the form of Batman Begins.

I’ll admit, this isn’t exactly timely news. It’s years old, but given that I had listened to this episode long before I’d come to LRM and forgotten it, it seemed worth a revisit.

What do you think of there possibly being a Batman Beyond movie? Do you think the DC Universe is primed to revisit this property? Sound off in the comics down below!
