It’s finally coming. In a few short weeks, audiences will finally be able to see the superhero horror movie we’ve been waiting to see for years. That’s right. Years. It’ll be two years since its original release date of The New Mutants, almost to the day. This was a film that was a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger, and it led to a lot of online reports. Many pointed to tons of necessary reshoots and a studio that didn’t have confidence in the vision of its director.
As it turns out, none of that stuff was true. As we reported on earlier in the week, director Josh Boone never intended on doing extensive reshoots. Had they actually returned to set, it would have likely been to do some minor pickups, which is standard for pretty much any movie these days. In its current form, there is only one thing they didn’t end up shooting that they would have for reshoots.
“It was intentional that we didn’t shoot it,” director Josh Boone told EW. “We had always planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next movie. We even had an actor cast, but because of the merger and because Marvel owns X-Men now and is going to do their own thing, there was no reason to go shoot it.”

If you’ll recall, Boone actually planned on doing a trilogy of films, which each new movie being its own type of horror film. But who would have appeared in the post-credits scene of this mythical second film? None other than Antonio Banderas — El Mariachi himself.
He would have likely played Emmanuel da Costa, Sunspot’s father. This could have led to a connection to the Hellfire Club in the comics and a trip to Brazil.
“We always intended to do New Mutants: Brazil as the second movie,” Boone said. They also had plenty of other plans to slowly bring more Mutants into the mix. However, with the merger happening, it seems unlikely that Disney would ever greenlight a sequel, especially since the Mutants are likely to pop up in the MCU. But Boone isn’t fully giving up hope.
“In our heart of hearts, we hope [The New Mutants] makes a bunch of money so that we can go make the second one,” he said. “We’re all just bummed at everything that happened. Just the merger and everything else. It had nothing to do with us personally and had an impact on every single movie at Fox at the time.”
Will it make nearly enough? Well, it does depend on how good the movie is, how hungry audiences are for a surprise horror superhero movie, and how bad the coronavirus gets.
