Why Certain Characters Are Missing From Season 3 Of Daredevil

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 OF MARVEL’S DAREDEVIL.

This past Friday we finally got the third season of Marvel’s Daredevil. It’s been three years since the first season of Daredevil debuted on Netflix and since then he has be joined by other heroes like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and the Punisher leading to a Defenders series (that did not include the Punisher of course). So by this point, you would think that these characters would have each other on speed dial right?

The question has came us as to why none of the other heroes were contacted by Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox to take down Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, from escaping prison. ComicBook.com had the opportunity to talk with Erik Oleson, the showrunner for the show, who talked about the reason behind the absence of Daredevil’s allies.

“Well, there’s a number of reasons,” Oleson said. “There’s the story reason of that Matt feels that it is his responsibility that Fisk’s release in large part is on him for not having taken care of it the first time around, or the second time around. And so Matt Murdock is determined to right the wrongs that he himself set in motion.”

For Daredevil, this battle between him and Fisk is personal. This is something that is evident by him also trying to keep his close friends Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll, as well as Foggy Nelson, played by Elden Henson, away from his mission to take down Fisk once and for all.

“He also, in a kind of a spiritual way, feels like God is speaking to him and is putting in front of him a raison d’etre, a reason to keep going and to keep existing after his heartbreaking life turn at the end of Defenders, where he walked out of the building, Elektra did not. And in episode one of this season, Matt essentially attempts suicide by thug. So he has spiritual and emotional reasons for why he doesn’t call in the Defenders.”

But besides the the character’s reasons for not wanting to involve anyone else, Oleson also talked about how much the story would be affected if they made it too easy for Daredevil and his allies.

“Then there’s the kind of meta writerly reason why I didn’t want to do that, and if one of the basic rules of great drama writing is that your protagonist must be out gunned by the agonist or else there’s no dramatic tension,” Oleson said. “If Matt can simply call Luke Cage and Jessica Jones and Danny Rand to come in and beat these other villains, your dramatic structure is lopsided. It becomes boring. It’s like suddenly the heroes have all the power and the villain is outgunned, and that becomes a major impediment to telling a great story. So that’s the other reason we did it, truthfully.”

Oleson makes a good point and as the third season of Daredevil was probably better off without them. So far it is being praised by both fans and critics. But if you added some of the other villains to the mix then of course that would make for a more compelling story. Kingpin, Bushmaster and Killgrave maybe?

Do you think the third season needed at least some of the other characters’ cameos? Or did you like it (or dislike it) the way it was done? Let us know in the comment section below!

Season 3 of Daredevil is now streaming only on Netflix.
