Why Titans Didn’t Start Out With Nightwing
While there are plenty of comic book fans out there who appreciate the Boy Wonder for who he is, I feel like most fans really prefer it when Dick Grayson runs around under the persona of Nightwing. In this guise, he’s darker, more mature, and he has a much cooler costume. It’s the kind of things you really start to appreciate once you start to grow insecure about your masculinity as a 12-year-old…or maybe that was just me.
Regardless, whenever you have Dick Grayson running around as Robin in any story, it’s nearly impossible for the question of whether or not he’ll ever suit up as Nightwing not to come up. It’s a big part of the character’s emotional journey and when you start out a story with him literally saying “f**k Batman,” as you do with DC Universe’s Titans, one has to wonder. But why didn’t they just start him out as Nightwing if they planned on making him so dark? Speaking with DC Comics, executive producer Geoff Johns answered that question, saying:
“We talked a lot about starting Dick Grayson as Nightwing. We all got to a point where we’re going to miss and hop over what I think is a really interesting period of Dick Grayson’s life where he left Batman and he was struggling to find a new identity and who he was.”

It sounds like it was just solid storytelling instinct here. You ask at what point a character is most prone to conflict and then aim for that spot, as it’ll make for the most interesting story. Johns continued:
“We took a sliver of the comics that dealt with Dick Grayson post-Batman a little bit and amplified that even more, exploring what that period for Dick Grayson was really like. Nightwing is such a stable, confident, emotionally balanced character—he’s Dick Grayson when he’s found his place in the world. We wanted to build up to him becoming Nightwing.”
So as sad as some may be over the lack of Nightwing, the logic here makes a lot of sense. But what do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below!
