Let’s be real. We all expected something along these lines at some point. While June is still a couple of months away, given the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 virus, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Wonder Woman 1984 was originally slated for a June 5 release, and fans have been waiting to see when the studio would inevitably push the film to a more lucrative date. And that’s exactly what happened,
Warner Bros. has pushed Wonder Woman 1984 more than two months. It will now hit theaters on August 14, 2020. That date was originally home to James Wan’s Malignant, but it’s now been marked as undated. I’m sure Wan understands the circumstances, and given his history with the studio, he’ll likely completely understand the move. Scoob has also been pushed from its May 15 date and In The Heights has been pulled from its June 26 date. None of those films have new release dates at this point.
“When we greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14,” Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, said in a statement. “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

This goes against previous rumors that Warner Bros. was considering a digital release for Diana Prince’s return. These rumors were batted down quickly by Emmerich himself, but in all honesty, you never know how things will shake out in these trying times. With so much of the future being up in the air, studios testing out digital releases isn’t the craziest thing in the world.
That being said, I am sure the National Association of Theatre Owners are happy to hear about this. With them losing out on months of business, there was concerns that the theater industry won’t be around when the coronavirus abates. At the very least, Warner Bros. is all-in on making theaters a part of their strategy.
