Zachary Levi Calls Shazam! Superman Meets Big

There’s a lot of the DC Extended Universe that we have questions about. How much will the overlords at Warner Bros. change of the films that are already in development? Will Justice League’s performance affect movies like Aquaman, how will the future of the universe-at-large play out?

However, if there’s one film we’re most curious about here, it’s Shazam! For the most part, a lot of the DC films have had pretty dark and consistent tones. Sure, some were darker than others, but Marvel movies they were not in terms of the joke-to-serious moments ratio. In this landscape, Shazam! is set to be a goofy-as-hell story about a kid who’s given ridiculous abilities.

Speaking with ET Online, actor Zachary Levi, who plays the titular Shazam, said:

“I can’t tell you much, as you can probably imagine, but what I can say is I am just out of my mind excited! I get to do my version of Big, basically. It’s like Superman meets Big, and that’s just so fun. I get to be a superhero that’s excited about being a superhero, and I think that’s refreshing. It’s not glum, and like, ‘Oh, I have to save the world again.’ So I think it’s all really gravy.”

For the longest time, I was a bit unsure of how they’d handle the character of Shazam. Given the world they had established with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, it seemed inevitable that they’d toss away the source material’s lighthearted nature in favor of something more serious (I even thought they’d make Black Adam Shazam instead of Billy Batson).

However, over the years, the studio has learned the joys of embracing the tone of the source material, and from the sound of it, are allowing Shazam! to be the film it needs to be to sell. Let’s just hope that the “Big meets Superman” sells to mainstream audiences.
