Alita Star Rosa Salazar Not Surprised A Sequel Isn’t In The Works Yet, But Is Open To Play The Role Forever

I was fairly certain Alita: Battle Angel was going to bomb. I love Robert Rodriguez, I enjoyed the source material manga well enough, and I’m totally in favor of seeing more manga adaptations grace Hollywood, but based on the lack of enthusiasm for the project here on the site from readers, I was certain it would be luck to crack $100 million worldwide, and I wasn’t alone.

But the film surprised us, doing pretty well with critics and fans and going on to make $400 million-plus worldwide. It didn’t set the world on fire, but it managed to hit the “admirable” range, and even opening up the possibility for a sequel…but we haven’t heard anything yet.

Star of the film, Rosa Salazar isn’t surprised by this.

“Yeah, I mean, they had a crazy merger,” Salazar said to /Film. “People are gaining jobs, people are losing jobs. The whole Disney/Fox acquisition is so involved, this isn’t the right time for me to call Alan Horn and be like, ‘Hey bro, I know you got a lotta stuff going on, but like what about Alita 2?’”

But as far as whether or not she would play the role:

“I would play Alita ‘til my last breath. I would, and thanks to the performance capture technology, I probably could.”

But is this going to happen? We’ll have to wait and see. Perhaps when the receipts come back from the first run of Blu-rays, Disney will see the profit in doing so. However, with them having more massively profitable franchises than any other studio, I don’t personally see a scenario where they risk another $175 million on an Alita 2 when they can funnel that movie into another project that’s a sure thing.

What do you think of us getting an Alita sequel? Do you see it happening? Let us know your thoughts down below!
