American Horror Story: Cult Gets Political In Opening Sequence

Gotta love a good opening. As an anime fan (a medium that’s well known for its ridiculous opening sequences), I’ve always been partial to crazy cool opening sequences for iconic TV shows, and American Horror Story is a show that’s alway capitalized on utilizing its openings to help set the tone for the episode going forward.

Sadly, last season saw the opening sequences disappear so that the reality TV style they shot in wouldn’t be lost. While this definitely made for an engrossing season (perhaps one of my favorites of the series on the whole), I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the style and creepiness inherent in their openings.

If you’re like me, you’ll be happy to hear that this year will bring back said openings with American Horror Story: Cult, and this time, things get political. This is no surprise. Ever since showrunner Ryan Murphy stated that the theme would revolve around the U.S. presidential election from last year, fans have been curious as to how they’d pull this off.

We now know that the election will serve as a backdrop, and that most of the show will portray the fallout following said election. Somehow, Twisty the Clown from American Horror Story: Freak Show will be involved, which is pretty cool. We also know that they plan to use news footage in the show itself, rather than have some fictionalized portrayal of then-candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Now, thanks to this opening sequence, it looks like there will at least be some folks running around in some rubber masks that resemble the two, which is fitting.
