Aquaman Stays Strong In First Place For Third Weekend In A Row
This past weekend saw only one film released in the form of Escape Room.
In first place, we got Aquaman, still going strong after a few weekends at the box office. This weekend, it took in a solid $30.7 million, only dropping 41.7% from its second weekend. While the movie’s opening wasn’t really much to speak of, its solid word of mouth really seems to be doing a lot of good for it. Additionally, with this film becoming the highest grosser in the DC Extended Universe (sitting at $940 million worldwide) and heading towards breaking $1 billion, it’s possible all that buzz is getting some U.S. audiences wondering what all the fuss is about. Regardless, this is a runaway success for Warner Bros. and proves just how lucrative the overseas markets can be when targeted well.
In second place, we have Escape Room, taking in $18.0 million in its opening weekend. Given the movie’s $9 million budget, this is already quite the success. Of course, with its high concept premise (one that really speaks to a world that’s having fun with real escape rooms), this isn’t exactly a surprise. It’s the kind of film that would have been right at home at Blumhouse, and there’s a reason why they’ve been so successful. But was the film any good? Well, it has a CinemaScore of a B and critical rating of 54%, so…it’s aight. The rating is nothing to write home about, and generally speaking, if you’re under a B+ CinemaScore, chances are you missed some opportunity, as audiences seem to be a bit lukewarm on the whole thing. On the whole, it’s not a runaway hit, but the successive weeks will show us whether or not that CinemaScore really reflects a lukewarm audience.

In third place, we have Mary Poppins Returns, taking in $15.8 million in its third weekend. It’s honestly a film that’s had a bit of a surprising performance. It really undershot expectations with its $23.5 million opening on the 21st of December, but quickly surprised the following weekend with an uptick in sales, which isn’t very common. In this third weekend, it only dropped 44.4%, perhaps indicating a good word of mouth. Thus far, the flick has made $257.9 million worldwide. Based on its $130 million budget, that’s not bad, but it still has some work to do in order to be a success, I think. At least it’s not as much of a disaster as The Nutcracker or A Wrinkle in Time and will likely turn a profit if this performance continues (if it hasn’t already).
