Avengers: Endgame Headed To Disney+ This December
The Disney+ train is about to take off soon, and I’m sure Disney themselves know that we’re completely on board. They have a whole bevy of original programming heading in the form of Marvel and Star Wars TV shows in addition to other Disney branded content. But we can’t forget the fact that the service will also be getting the home releases of their theatrical releases, not the least of which are the MCU films.
Quite famously, it was reported that Captain Marvel would be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that won’t be released on Netflix at all, and would head straight to Disney+, and of course, Avengers: Endgame would be following suit. But what when would that movie actually land the service?
In a recent Q&A session with Disney CEO Bob Iger during the 6th Annual MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, it was revealed that Avengers: Endgame would be hitting the service on December 11, 2019. So what does this mean for you, the consumer? While we can’t say for sure, it seems clear that Disney is not seeing their streaming service as a replacement for digital releases — at least not initially.

Avengers: Infinity War hit digital release on July 31, 2018, and while there is no release date for Endgame, it seems like a good bet it’ll hit around the same time this year. I can’t see them sacrificing a revenue stream like digital home video, and as far as we can tell, Disney+ is a whole new beast in and of itself, likening itself more to Netflix than anything else.
That being said, Iger did also state that if they find releasing movies on Disney+ sooner is more valuable, then they’ll do that, and the strategy of when they release title will be decided on a title-by-title basis. So, at the very least, they seem open to the idea of testing the waters. We’ll just see how consumers react!
