Avengers: Endgame – Jeremy Renner On How The Vormir Section Was Originally Very Different

In movies, things change right up until the very last moment when they are unleashed upon audiences and that’s no different for the likes of Avengers: Endgame, a movie which could well go on to become the biggest grossing movie of all time in the next few weeks, or may not, it’s going to be close. Now that Endgame is almost at the end of its theatrical run, the cast and crew can speak freely about it in a way they haven’t been able to thus far.

Some of the movies cast including Chris Evans, Don Cheadle, and Jeremey Renner were in Seattle this past weekend for Ace Comic-Con and Jeremey Renner was asked about the death scene he shot with Scarlett Johansson set on Vormir. The actor went on to explain that this was actually a re-shoot and the original shoot for this scene was very different, check out the transcript courtesy of ComicBook.com.

“We shot it, and it’s very different from what’s in the movie now,” Renner explained. “It’s a scene we re-shot because it was much more complicated [than the] scene that’s in Endgame now. There’s an attack, Thanos is in some ship or something, and a bunch of weird aliens were running around and it was too complicated, so what they did is we shot the scene, still with the same kind of idea, but now we’re just fighting each other to commit suicide for the soul stone. We shot that not that long ago. Six months ago. It was a tough scene… for both of us.”

Interesting that this would have actually been the first time when Thanos appeared to the Avengers, as only Nebula was aware of his presence and meddling until Thanos appeared on Earth with his armies. However, ultimately I think the Russo’s made the right decision to reshoot this in the manner they did. The scene was more emotional to have this pair of friends competing against one another to save the other from suicide, whilst understanding that one of them had to make that sacrifice. I think having Thanos attacking that planet would have felt too chaotic for that very spiritual and self-reflective environment and taken something away from the finality of that scene.
