Avengers: Infinity War wears the title of being both a motion picture phenomenon and one that has devasted fans with its memorable and, in some cases, heartbreaking ending. It’s been a month since its release, and as it continues to make record profits at the box office, many have wondered how the filmmakers can keep audiences invested and entertained in the next film, given that Infinity War ended in such an epic and tragic way.

Recently, The New York Times sat down with the creative minds behind franchises like The Maze RunnerStar Wars, and The Avengers to gain insight into how they tackle their overall story arcs in their cinematic stories. The writers of Avengers: Infinity War, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, explained that their vision was always a two-part finale to the series.

Markus explained that there was a brief moment where the dreaded Thanos “finger snap” was set to take place in the second film, Avengers 4. “But what we realized is, it would feel more like a cliffhanger than we intended. It would be a continuation of exactly what you were watching before,” Markus said.

The final choice to make the finger snap the ending isn’t only tragic, but it also completes the story for this particular film. It has been said that Avengers: Infinity War is a Thanos film and while he is the villain, it works having the heroes do all they can to stop him and inevitably fail as Thanos achieves his goal. It provides a result that has been built up for the past ten years while also leaving the audience to wonder what may be planned for the next film. A tragic finale that will leave the people guessing what the Avengers’ response will be coming May of 2019.
