A scandal in 2015 rocked the soccer world when corruption was uncovered in connection with the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). United States’ FBI and IRS uncovered more than a dozen people associated with crimes into wire fraud, racketeering, and money laundering.
This week, Amazon Prime launched a television series El Presidente that fictionalizes a story in the backdrop of the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal.
Series creator Armando Bo developed a world surrounding Sergio Jadue, who at the time of the investigation, was the vice president of CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) and president of ANFP (National Association of Professional Soccer), which governs soccer in Chile. He had the rise into the soccer organization after directing a small club La Calera.
Bo described the series to the LA Times as a tragicomedy. Despite being set in the soccer world, the series focuses on the business side and corruption of soccer and not the sport itself.
The series stars Andres Parra (Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal) in the iconic role of Sergio Jadue. He is supported by a well-rounded cast with Karla Souza (How to Get Away with Murder), Paulina Gaitan (Sin Nombre), and Alberto Ajaka (Juan y Eva).
LRM Online obtained some behind the scene interview clips with the cast and director discussing the story behind El Presidente.
El Presidente is now playing on Amazon Prime Video today. Click here to jump to the show’s page on Amazon Prime.
