Disney+ Rocks 26.5 Million Subscribers, Mandalorian Season 2 To Hit October!

I don’t think I could paint a more starkly different picture if I tried. Earlier today, I wrote up a report on Apple TV+ and how only 10% of those eligible for a free year of the service actually signed up. And then you have Disney+, a service that fans exploded over from day one, resulting in 10 million subscribers in its first 24 hours. But, now that The Mandalorian has ended and there are no foreseeable big-ticket series on the horizons, how did things shake out?

Well, not too badly. Actually, pretty damn well, if we’re being honest. In an earnings call today, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Disney+ currently has 26.5 million subscribers. Sure, Netflix has a whopping 167 million global subscribers, but Disney+ is not yet a global service, and it’s still only the first few months. With that in mind, Iger’s calling the launch “enormously successful” isn’t hyperbole by any means.

But that wasn’t all Disney had to share. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a certain child in The Mandalorian who has taken the world by storm,” Iger said. He went on to promise an array of Baby Yoda merchandise in the coming months.

But that ain’t all, folks! We also got an update on The Mandalorian’s second season, in addition to Marvel shows The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, and they look to be very strategically placed.

First up, in August, we have The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will seemingly chronicle Falcon’s struggles to fill the boots of one Steve Rogers, all the while, the government seems intent on filling the void with another star-spangled agent.

Next is The Mandalorian Season 2, which will continue on the Lone Wolf and Cub narrative that took the world by storm this past November. No further details are available, but in the meantime, I’m sure you’ll all get a kick out of all that dank-ass Baby Yoda merch. In addition to that, it was confirmed that there will be more The Mandalorian Season 2 and that certain characters could pop up in the show down the line, with the expectation that they will spin off into their own series.

Finally, in December will come perhaps the most exciting project, WandaVision, which will feature some real mind-bending shenanigans with both Wanda and (you guessed it) Vision. Given that Vision is actually dead, I’m sure all that crazy visual stuff all has something to do with that. But, until we find out for sure, you can just enjoy these images from the show that a fan lined up into a strip.

Finally, one last detail is that the Marvel shows will clock in at six episodes apiece and The Mandalorian will continue on with eight episodes, though there are no details on how long the actual episodes will be for the Marvel properties.

Either way, it’s nice to see Disney+ continue on with their premiere content. I’m interested to see if fans are willing to stick around for the months at a time that the big shows won’t be present.
