You remember back when very few movies would have budgets over $100 million? Yeah, what a quaint era in filmmaking that was. Nowadays, $100 million is a budget reserved for franchises studios don’t QUITE have enough faith in but have just enough give the movie some production value. Pretty much, the standard bar seems to be around $150 million, and $250 million is reserved for the select few that the studio has IMMENSE faith in.
It’s with that in mind that we head into the next bit of news, which comes from the outlet PursueNews, and involves Disney’s upcoming live-action Mulan remake. According to them, the project is currently underway in preproduction in New Zealand, and that the House of Mouse has set aside a budget of $290 million for the war flick.

Interestingly enough, this puts director Niki Caro in very rare company. She is only the 10th women to have a film whose budget is over $100 million…but she’s passed that budget by a wide margin. She’s obviously the only woman to have a film whose budget is over $290 million, but I wonder if there has been a woman who’s directed a film with a budget that’s broken $200 million. From what I know, Brave‘s Brenda Chapman currently holds that record.
Clearly riding high off of Beauty and the Beast‘s billion-dollar success, Disney is betting big that Mulan could be just as big, if not, bigger.
