Doctor Strange 2 Director Steps Down Due To ‘Creative Differences’

In October of 2016 Marvel Studios released Doctor Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character Dr. Stephen Strange. It was directed by Scott Derrickson and went on to be a success at the box office as it grossed $680 million globally. Going forward on their slate Marvel Studios is scheduled to release a sequel titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in May of 2021, but that may have hit a roadblock.

This evening Variety is reporting that director Derrickson who was on board to direct the sequel is stepping down. The studio has confirmed his departure in a statement that creative differences played a part, but he will be continue to work on the film as an executive producer. In a Tweet that you can see below, Derrickson also said that the decision was mutual.

Variety received a statement from Marvel about Derrickson’s departure that said, “Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

Although they are currently looking for his replacement, the film is still expected to begin shooting in May and for now there are not expected to be any delays. The Dr. Strange sequel will feature a returning Cumberbatch as Strange and Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlett Witch is also expected to appear in the film.

Before we get to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness there are a few Marvel films that will be released. This May we will get to see more into the world of Black Widow. Then in November we will meet a group of immortal aliens. Then in February of 2021 Marvel will release it’s first Asian lead film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

If there are creative differences between the direction a studio wants to take and a director on a film, especially one that has to fit in a specific universe like the MCU, it’s best for them to go their separate ways. But with shooting just a few months away I am curious to what those differences were. What do you think of Derrickson’s departure? Who would you like to see Marvel Studios replace him with? Let us know in the comment section below!

Currently Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still scheduled for May 7th, 2020.
