Doctor Strange Director Looking Forward To Black Panther Breaking His Record

While we may be used to comic book movies breaking $800 million on the regular, it’s hard to realign our expectations when it comes to the solo origin films. If you look at the overall box office hauls of films like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Ant-Man, you have numbers that range from $370 million to $520 million. While this isn’t bad, it doesn’t really fall in line with our perception of what a success is nowadays (even though all were successful enough to lock down sequels).

To date, Marvel Studios’ most successful origin film is none other than Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson. The movie took in $677.7 million worldwide and set a new high mark for future solo movies. The next one to hit will be Black Panther next month, and according to Derrickson himself, he’s very much looking forward to seeing the film snatch the record from Doctor Strange.

We can’t help but agree that Black Panther — should it be a good film — is on track to take in more than Doctor Strange. As we discussed in the latest episode of Los Fanboys, we wouldn’t be surprised if the film hit anywhere from $700 million to $750 million.

Given the fact that Black Panther was one of the cooler aspects of Captain America: Civil War, that his standalone movie looks to contain amazing action, and that the said movie may bring out an unprecedented number of African-American audiences (in addition to the typical Marvel Studios fan), it all seems to be culminating into the perfect storm of success.
