Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Tweets Trailer For Season Five Of HBO’s Ballers

On Sunday morning, wrestler-turned-actor/producer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tweeted out the trailer for the upcoming fifth season of HBO’s Ballers. The season is set to premiere on Sunday, August 25th, on the premium cable network. Check out the trailer by clicking on the Twitter link above.

Created by Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire, Entourage) and produced by Levinson, Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Peter Berg (Patriots Day, Friday Night Lights, The Rundown), Ballers centers on Spencer Strasmore (Johnson), a former NFL star who now works as a financial advisor for today’s athletes. Last season saw Strasmore in a standoff against the NFL regarding the building of a stadium in Las Vegas and the tactics the league uses in acquiring talent from college. Season five looks to continue in the aftermath of that standoff and where Strasmore is headed to now. Judging by the trailer, it looks like this season will place a focus on Strasmore’s upbringing and how it placed him on the path that has lead to his current status.

The series also stars John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman), Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Jazmyn Simon (Acrimony), Omar Benson Miller (8 Mile), Troy Garity (Barbershop), Dulé Hill (Psych), and Richard Schiff (The West Wing, Man Of Steel). HBO’s Ballers account, Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, and Johnson’s production partner Danny Garcia tweeted out the season five trailer as well.

Personally, as someone who has been a fan of Johnson ever since he entered the WWE ring in the late ’90s, I feel his best work is in this series. Unlike his summer blockbuster/popcorn action flicks—which I enjoy as well—Ballers gives Johnson the ability to focus primarily on comedy and drama. There isn’t machine-gun bullets, speeding cars, or explosions to dodge, but scenes that revolve around the inner workings and “diplomacy” of closing deals, managing athletes, and the darkness of drug addiction. Plus, Johnson has surrounded himself with veteran talent like Corddry and Schiff, as well as special guest stars like Andy Garcia, Steven Weber, Steve Gutenberg, and Christopher “Shooter McGavin” McDonald that helps to bring out the thespian inside the 6’5″ “Brahma Bull.”
