Edge of Tomorrow 2 Will Make The First Movie ‘Make Complete Sense,’ Writer Says

Edge of Tomorrow, which starred Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise, didn’t exactly take off when it hit theaters way back in 2014. It barely broke $100 million at the domestic box office on a reported budget of around $175 million. But the film seems to have gained enough of a following after its home release to warrant a sequel. This is good news for those who liked the movie – and there were lots of those people, as Edge of Tomorrow holds a blistering 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid B+ on CinemaScore.

Well, it seems that the movie, which was sort of an action sci-fi twist on the familiar Groundhog Day premise, still has some ‘splainin to do. For those who didn’tquite understand the vague ending of the movie, writer Chris McQuarrie offers some assistance. Over the weekend, McQuarrie responded to a tweet with:

Since the movie revolved around an alien that could rewind time over and over again, we can only conclude that the creature either didn’t die after all, was able to rewind time to save itself, or there’s something else at play. If you’re having a tough time remembering the ending of the film, Cruise’s character, Cage, died in the attempt to kill the alien. Just as he seemed to have sacrificed himself for humanity, the time-skewing blood of the monster poured down around him and he woke up in the past, alive and well. What’s more, humanity had triumphed over the aliens in this new, alternate (?) timeline. We suppose the new film will address the specifics of how it all logically works.

In related news, Edge of Tomorrow had a bit of a strange road with its title. The movie opened in theaters as Edge of Tomorrow, but when it arrived in homes, its title had been changed to the movie’s tagline, Live, Die, Repeat. Now, Edge of Tomorrow 2 will reportedly be titled Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat.

To this, McQuarrie offered:
