The panel started out with them handing out plastic Fitbit-looking wristbands that bore the Deathly Hallows insignia on them…suspicious to say the least.
Once the lights dimmed, wrap-around screen turned into the inside of Newt Scamander’s suitcase. He opens it from the outside, points his wand at the audience, and all our wristbands glowed blue. We then got into a sort of sizzle reel of hand-drawn versions of the characters on the screens, with the music building. Eddie Redmayne then jumped up on stage as the music swelled, swinging around his wand as our wristbands glowed blue once again.
After asking a question from the audience, the rest of the cast (including Jude Law) came on stage and then the new trailer was shown!
There’s a lot of great stuff in the trailer. Dumbledore needs Newt to move against Grindelwald, because he can’t do so himself, but why…? Perhaps it has to do with his romantic inclinations towards Grindelwald? During the panel, Jude Law stated that this is very much a “Whose side are you on? Story?” Law also calls this the darkest story the franchise has had yet.
Also, there one key cameo in the trailer came in the form of Nicolas Flamel…the audience lost their minds.
Jude Law describes Dumbledore as “spritely” and “mischievous.” Of course, he also has secrets — which will come as no surprise to those who have seen the movies and read the books.
Moderator Aisha Tyler then turns the conversation to Grindelwald…only for the lights to dim. Johnny Depp comes out on stage in character as Grindelwald and gives a chilling, dictatorial speech about the places of muggles in society.
