Star Wars is known for using the latest cutting-edge technology. During the original trilogy, George Lucas and his crew basically had to invent the tech they needed. Oftentimes while in the middle of a film’s production. Today, The Mandolorian continues that tradition.
The Disney+ series is making use of the groundbreaking stagecraft technology referred to as The Volume. This giant leap forward utilizes a video game engine to create virtual filming environments. For any of you who are film tech and behind-the-scenes nerds, this stuff is must-see. Truly amazing.

In the latest episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Bryce Dallas Howard talks of a conversation she had with Lucas years ago. Howard says the filmmaker spoke about a stagecraft-like tech, where films and TV shows could be shot in virtual environments. And according to current Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Lucas wanted to develop the technology himself.
Lucas had intended to construct a new studio on his Skywalker Ranch property. However, nearby residents were none too pleased with the idea. Lucas was never able to build the new facility. And It wasn’t long after he made the deal to sell Lucasfilm to Disney.
An interesting chunk of information here, but not surprising at all that Lucas sort of foreseen the stagecraft tech. If nothing else, Lucas is certainly a visionary. Star Wars and Lucasfilm have always pioneers of VFX, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
