Last year, it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would be taking the helm of the adaptation of the dark kids book series, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Given the filmmaker’s background in horror — and not just horror, but fairy tale-like stories with horrific elements — he seemed like a perfect fit.
Unfortunately, like many projects, del Toro had to drop out of the film, as Deadline reports. He will still be sticking around as one of the producers, but has stepped aside. The reason hasn’t been revealed, but of course, del Toro is a busy director, so it likely had to do with scheduling, along with the desire to actually get the movie made.
However, it sounds like they’ll be getting a decent replacement for him. On board to direct Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is André Øvredal, who is known for his work on The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Trollhunter.
Deadline describes the project as follows:
“The thriller follows a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.”
On board to write the script for the film are The LEGO Movie writers Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman.
