Henry Golding Gives Bleak Update On His G.I. Joe Future

Snake Eyes: Deadgame - Rob Liefeld

The G.I. Joe franchise can’t seem to catch a break on the big screen. After three subpar attempts at making the ‘80s toy property cool again, Paramount seeks to reboot it in a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. But what does this mean for Henry Golding, the star of 2021’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins?

While promoting The Old Guard 2 in an interview with ComicBook.com, Golding revealed that since the box office failure of Snake Eyes, absolutely “no one” at Paramount has contacted him about reprising the character for future installments.

“I know there’s stuff happening — there are rumors of Transformers and Snake Eyes. I don’t know if they’ll just skip our G.I. Joe and go back to the original G.I. Joe, like, who knows? I think we had a rough, rough run on that one.

Snake Eyes suffered from plenty outside of Golding’s performance. The classic Hasbro toy line, which surged in popularity in the ‘80s thanks to the Marvel comic book series and the classic animated series, has struggled to embrace its “Real American Hero” roots in modern times. The initial attempts on film in 2009 and 2013 overcame negative reviews to do decent box office worldwide. But the heavy sci-fi vibe over grounded combat never really caught on with global audiences the same way Transformers did.

Then there’s the lack of appeal Snake Eyes had as a solo movie. The usually silent but agile ninja was reworked to be a full character who spoke. His origin was a complete deviation from the established backstory that Larry Hama wrote in the comics. Despite these problems for the older Joe fans, Golding remains interested in the part if the studio asks him back.

I would love to [return]. I think there was so much potential. And I think it’s such a great character, and it’s such a great universe. So, I do hope that they bring it back just for the fans, you know? I don’t have to be in there.”

As of now, Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is penning the script with Chris Hemsworth reportedly attached to star. There is no release date or director attached.
