His Dark Materials Season 3, the final season of the epic adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s novels has begin shooting in Wales. The third season of the show, which is co-produced by both BBC and HBO will also be the last. I’ve always said I think the final book being adapted here, The Amber Spyglass could easily take up two seasons. However I have to say I don’t think His Dark Materials has been as successful as either BBC or HBO hoped. So the fact we are getting an ending at all is great news.
The last time this story was adapted in movie The Golden Compass, it never even got a sequel. The movie felt higher budget than the series in some ways, but the series is so much better than the movie ever came close to being. Deadline report that HDM S3 is underway and has been since late May in Wales, the home of Welsh based BBC studio Bad Wolf.

Most of the cast from Season’s 1 and 2 will return, if they survived that far. Some will even return despite not surviving, but I won’t get into spoilers here. However, we also have a ton of new cast members joining the show in Season 3. As per Deadline‘s report, here they are.
New cast includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Suicide Squad) as Commander Ogunwe; Jamie Ward (Tyrant) as Father Gomez; Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Simon Harrison (No Man’s Land), and Chipo Chung (Into the Badlands) are the rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch, and Xaphania; Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe as Ama.
Executive producer Jane Tranter said:
“This season is both an epic adventure and a story about love and truth. Jack, Francesca and Amelia’s scripts capture the brilliance of Philip’s worlds and we are joined by our much-loved existing cast and some exceptional talent new to the series.”
I love this story, and I can’t wait to see how this team imagining the final third. The Amber Spyglass is far and away the most ambitious book of the trilogy, and the longest. I’d have to guess that the budget for Season 3 must be far beyond either Season 1 or 2. Without spoiling the story for non book readers, there is more spectacle to be had in the finale.
