Fans of the long-running Goosebumps novels have already had a healthy dose of adaptations. Of course, there was that series in the ‘90s many of us grew up on. There were also the two live-action movies starring Jack Black that came out not too long ago. Neither of the films set the world on fire, but they were pretty well-received by those who went to see them. They offered plenty of nods to the original novels all while being its own new thing.
But you may not have been happy with those. Perhaps you’re the kind of person who actually wants to see specific stories adapted. Forget about the meta nature of the movies. You’re just into the idea of fun, spooky tales, am I right? Well, that is exactly the approach the old ‘90s series took, and it makes sense since it’s a more fitting take for television. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that we’re going to be getting a new TV series soon enough.
Deadline is reporting that a Goosebumps live-action series is in the works from Scholastic Entertainment and Sony Pictures TV. On board to help develop the series is Neal H. Moritz, the producer of the aforementioned movies.
“Goosebumps has been keeping kids and families on the edge of their seats for nearly 30 years and we’re very excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Neal H. Moritz to bring the enduring brand to life in a fresh new way for today’s generation,” said Iole Lucchese., Scholastic Entertainment President and Chief Strategy Officer. “From the world-famous book series to a full-scale licensing program and even live-action movies starring Jack Black, Goosebumps remains wildly popular and we look forward to presenting new adventures to give fans even more Goosebumps.”

Lucchese will act as executive producer alongside Moritz, Scholastic’s SVP and general manager Caitlin Friedman, and Original Head of Television Pavun Shetty.
There are currently no details as to what their approach to a TV series would be, but I can’t help but have my own theories. As I mentioned above, the films took more of a meta approach. They existed in a world where the Goosebumps books were a thing. However, with a TV series, I think the anthological approach would likely be the better approach. It’s a better fit for the medium and it won’t be aping the higher-budget movies.
And if they really wanted, they could even create a little frame story around Jack Black — if he’s willing to slum it onto TV. I think there are some great opportunities here. While I haven’t read the books for a solid 20-some-odd years, I think there’s a lot of potential to grab both kids and adults for this one.
