James Gunn Gives Batman: The Brave And The Bold Update

Since its announcement in 2023, development on Batman: The Brave and the Bold has been a hot-button topic for James Gunn’s DCU. Mystery has surrounded this project with rumors of bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman over into Gunn’s new vision. Additionally, there’s the conflicting status of director Andy Muschietti.

In a new interview with IGN, Gunn was pressed about recent developments surrounding the DCU Batman. Though he says “I like where we are” regarding The Brave and the Bold script, the Superman director cautions that “plenty of things are in flux”. One issue surrounds the age range for actors looking to play Bruce Wayne/Batman.

“I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it – Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to… Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the number of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.”

Another matter that Gunn holds back on disclosing is the inclusion of Bruce’s 10-year-old son, Damian Wayne. Of all the Boy Wonders who teamed up with the Dark Knight, Gunn considers Damian his favorite Robin. As far as whether Robin will be in the film, Gunn added, “I think you have to wait to see exactly what’s happening”.

Further developments on The Brave and the Bold may depend on what happens with Matt Reeves’s The Batman 2. What made the DCEU suffer was having multiple takes on popular characters at once. Reeves’s sequel to the 2022 hit is further along with a completed script and plans to start production in 2026. Separating Pattison’s Batman and the DCU one is something Gunn told Rolling Stone is the biggest on his mind.

“Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be ‘Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,’ which he is. But because there’s a need for him in the DCU and a need that he’s not exactly the same as [The Batman director] Matt [Reeves]’s Batman. But yet he’s not a campy Batman. I’m not interested in that. I’m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we’re dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it’s — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.”
