James Gunn Says Groot Is Dead, Baby Groot Is His Son
It’s kind of hard to take deaths in comic book movies seriously. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe alone, I’ve lost count of the number of characters who have “died” only to come back later. This kind of seemed to be the case with Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Yes, it was incredibly sad at the end of that film when Groot sacrificed himself to save the rest of the Guardians, but before even the end of the runtime, a stick had been picked up and replanted in a pot, hinting at Groot’s return. Right before the closing credits themselves, we were treated to the dancing Baby Groot scene, and like many people, I assumed this was the same Groot, only reincarnated.

Director James Gunn has had to clear this up on a few different occasions, but he once again had to go to Twitter to clear the air.
First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

That’s right. If you were somehow unsure, then let this be the moment your doubts are laid to rest. Groot is dead. Groot is no longer. Groot’s existence has been eliminated from the MCU. In his place, we now have a smaller, similar creature who is its own being, for better or worse.
This explain any confusion about why Groot acts so different from Baby Groot. Baby Groot isn’t Groot starting from square one. It’s literally a baby growing up from the ground-up.
Are you happy to hear about Baby Groot being his own thing? Does this help give Groot’s death in that first film a bit of extra weight? Let us know your thoughts down below!
