James Mangold Apologizes — But Defends — Never Putting Wolverine In His Iconic Yellow Outfit

“What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” Cyclops said in 2000’s X-Men film. The comment was in response to Logan (aka Wolverine) complaining about the leather-clad outfits they were all wearing. Of course, the film came out in a time where comic books weren’t nearly as respected as they are today. Studios didn’t think comic-book-accurate costumes for our heroes would sell, so they opted for pure leather. Because, you know, The Matrix came out and leather was the most badass material anyone could possibly wear.

In the decades since (can you believe it’s been decades?), comic book movies have become more faithful. While the costumes may not always skew towards comic-book-accurate (hello, Hawkey), many get pretty close. You need only look at characters like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Mysterio to see how seriously filmmakers take the original designs. But, in spite of that, we’ve never seen Wolverine wear his iconic yellow outfit.

The closest we got was in a deleted scene from 2013’s The Wolverine. In it, we saw him open a case featuring his yellow gloves and his pointy mask. It would be as far as the X-Men films got to Logan looking anything close to his comic book counterpart. So, we never even got to see him wear it. Even though he appeared in a few more movies following The Wolverine, that would be the closest we got. Not even in the gritty western film Logan.

“Sorry. He never put it on,” director James Mangold said, responding to a question if Jackman ever once put on the iconic outfit. “We never even made a version of the outfit. Everything about his character as I understand it, would keep him from donning a self promoting ‘uniform.’ I’m sure the next incarnation of the Wolverine will go there.”

I’m sure there are plenty of fans out there that would disagree, but you can see where Mangold is coming from. Logan is a self-loathing individual, and even when he worked with the X-Men in the films, it was more through moral obligation than any real desire. Putting on a “uniform” of sorts could be seen as a betrayal of his own ideals.

Mangold also brings up another good point — that the next iteration will go there. As stated above, the costumes are skewing closer and closer to the comics — especially over in the MCU. With Marvel Studios now having the rights to the X-Men, it is inevitable that the new version of the character will wear his yellow outfit at some point. It’s just a matter of when…
