Star of the new film Underwater, Jessica Henwick already has her place in a galaxy far, far away as X-Wing pilot for Resistance Jess Pava, but as it turns out she almost had a much bigger role in the saga, that of Rey. Henwick went through what was likely a grueling six-month audition for the trilogies heroine only to be told she didn’t get the part.
J.J. Abrams Henwick her enough that he wrote the part Jess Pava specifically for her. Henwick recently spoke with CinemaBlend and talked about the audition process and how she ultimately didn’t get the role of Rey.
“Oh my God, dude. That was fucking six months. That was a long one. I was auditioning for a different character, actually, so I spent six months auditioning for that character. And then, at the end, J.J. said, ‘I want you to be in the film, but I want to write a character for you.’ That’s how Jess Pava was created. So, it was a very, very long experience. It’s hard because I’ve been doing this long enough to know that you go in, audition, put it to the back of your mind, don’t think about it and don’t get emotionally invested. But, after six months, you can’t help but just desperately want it. I’m also such a big J.J. fan. So, I was a mess at the end of those six months.”

That sounds like a brutal process, though not getting the role would likely be a mondo bummer, the feeling of landing that role or any as large as this one has to be good motivation to keep going. If I had lost the lead role in a franchise tas big as Star Wars, I would hope to be lucky enough to still be part of the franchise as Henwick did, cool move J.J.
