Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says Grogu won’t learn to speak within The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. Whilst Kennedy has since departed from Lucasfilm’s top job she remains a producer on The Mandalorian and Grogu. In a recent interview with Variety Kennedy spoke a little about Grogu and the connection to E.T. one of the more famous movies Kennedy produced.
Kennedy described Grogu as,
“another perfect example of a character that has to emote and you have to feel connected to, and he never speaks a word.”
‘Kennedy said audiences will fall deeper in love with the popular character “on the big screen, and he never says a word.” She confirmed that, despite Yoda’s oft-quoted broken English, Grogu will not gain the power of speech in the new film.’
Is it ever going to happen though, or are Lucasfilm wise enough to know the character won’t survive ageing up and thus will lose his marketability? This is not The Simpsons and despite the long lived nature of the species how far can they stretch this kid not growing or learning to speak?

Kennedy also spoke about how she has basically been grooming new co-presidents Filoni and Brennan into the role over the last years.
“It didn’t just happen six months ago. I spent 10 years talking Dave [Filoni] into gradually stepping into live action. He had so much experience in animation. He’s so knowledgeable about Star Wars and loves it so much, it’s really been a 10-year mentoring process for both of them. Lynwen [Brennan] came out of Industrial Light & Magic. She was my GM the entire time. I would argue that the transition has been really pretty seamless,” Kennedy said.’
I guess we shall see in the future. One, how The Mandalorian and Grogu shapes up. Along with Starfighter, it will be a reminder of Kennedy’s legacy either way. Just to cement Kennedy’s legacy it would not surprise me if one of them is brilliant and the other is terrible, showing the inconsistency of her run.
Two, how well Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan really were groomed for their new role.
Does it bother you at all that Grogu won’t learn to speak in The Mandalorian and Grogu? How long do you think they can stretch the Grogu love out for? Thoughts below as always.
