Kylo Ren’s State Of Mind In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Though he can be whiny like his grandfather and uncle, and has a galaxy-famous temper, Kylo Ren is perhaps the best Star Wars villain since the legendary Darth Vader, so far. Kylo Ren, formally Ben Solo, is an interesting case study in relation to to his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker. While Anakin wanted nothing more than to be a Jedi Knight, but was unable to avoid the temptations of the Dark Side, Ren seems to have the opposite problem; he wants to be a baddass like Vader, but he seems to be tempted by the Light.

By the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren had murdered his father, Han Solo, and lost a Lightsaber duel to Rey, someone completely new to the Force (to be fair, Ren was very badly injured going into the fight). Scarred by Luke’s old Lightsaber, Ren was whisked off the Starkiller base before its destruction, off to train further with Supreme Leader Snoke after completing the step in his training that involved killing his father.

So, is Kylo Ren in a better place after overcoming such a painful obstacle? Adam Driver, who plays Ren, discussed his character’s state of mind going into Star Wars: The Last Jedi with Vanity Fair:

“I feel like almost everyone is in that rehabilitation state. You know, I don’t think that patricide is all that it’s cracked up to be. Maybe that’s where Kylo Ren is starting from. His external scar is probably as much an internal one.”

It sounds like Ren is still struggling with the Light, or has received less of a Dark-Side-morale-boost than he expected after killing his father. In addition to Driver’s killer and creepy performance, what makes Ren so interesting is this almost backward struggle he has that no other villain in the universe has dealt with. To hear that Ren is still broken makes me very excited for what comes next, indeed.
