It’s been months since Luke Cage has been officially canceled by Netflix. Yes, it was a sad day, for sure, and one many of us are still hoping will be a big ruse leading up to a big Heroes for Hire announcement. But with each passing day, that feels less and less likely. But with that, it’s sometimes nice to look back at some of the highlights of the seasons past.
LRM Online had a chance to speak with actor Thomas Q. Jones, who plays Comanche, Shades’ best friend and lover, who is revealed to be a snitch. It was an emotional role that also pushed things forward in the LGBTQ community, and it’s a bit surprising to hear in retrospect that the character wasn’t even originally considered for the show before Jones auditioned, as he revealed to us.

“[Luke Cage series creator] Cheo Coker, who I’ll always forever be grateful for for giving me the opportunity. Comanche originally wasn’t in the character breakdown, and I auditioned for Shades when I first auditioned. But he saw me and he saw me and he had the idea, ‘Hey, Comanche is a character,’ let me make him Comanche and put him next to Theo. He’s a brilliant. He’s a brilliant creator. He saw the potential in me as an actor and then putting me in that character and he just let me expand on it and it turned into what it was.”
And when asked if he would like to see the show return from Disney, Jones answered in the affirmative, going on to say that “it’s a one of a kind show.” I know, for many of us, Luke Cage Season 2 saw a marked improvement in quality, so to see it get canceled so quickly following its release was a bit disheartening, to say the least.
But the film and TV industry is nothing if not unpredictable, so who knows what the future holds for Luke Cage.
