Venom is just around the corner from hitting theaters, and at this point, many fans still aren’t quite sure what to think of it. There are plenty who still lament that Sony opted to make this standalone film when Marvel Studios has proven time and again just how well they handle their own properties. However, as clips and trailers have come out, I’ve seen plenty of others who have started to change their tune about the whole thing. Perhaps this won’t be so bad after all?
One aspect they definitely have in their favor is director Ruben Fleischer, known mostly for his work on Zombieland. Zombieland was an unexpected gem of a film, whose irreverent tone that was all sorts of fun. While not fans’ first choice, he was an interesting fit for this film, and given the right circumstances, could definitely make a cool movie. But what attracted him to the project in the first place?
Our own Gig Patta asked Fleischer that very question. Here’s what he told us:
“When I heard they were making this film, at first I wasn’t quite sure how you do it without Spider-Man, but as soon as I read the script and started to imagine the world and character and Tom Hardy playing it, I thought this could be a really, really cool film. Especially tonally, you know. We haven’t seen anything quite like this. A little darker, a little edgier, but also just really entertaining and fun, and funny at times.”

Those certainly seem to be good indicators. Of course, the difference in tone is an obvious one, but the key comment here for me is the comment about the character’s origin. Many fans are unsure about giving him an origin outside of Spider-Man. It’s nice to know that the director they hired was also unsure about this origin but what somehow swayed by what the script offered. Does this mean it’ll be great? We’ll have to wait and see. But I am happy the director at least acknowledged it.
