When consuming pieces of media, it’s easy to assume that they always existed that way in the heads of their creators. They’re so ingrained in our own heads as they turned out, and as a result, we often incorrectly assume that, while the filmmakers may have made some changes here and there, the spine of the story remained intact throughout the process.

Not so, as it turns out. At least this is the case with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Speaking with Mark Hamill during a New York Times cover story, director Rian Johnson revealed a shocking piece of trivia to the actor.
“Did I ever tell you that early on when I was trying to figure out the story for this, I had a brief idea I was chasing where I was like, ‘What if Luke is blind? What if he’s, like, the blind samurai?’ But we didn’t do it. You’re welcome. Didn’t stick.”
That would have given a lot of interesting subtext to that final scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and would have basically revealed why Luke didn’t say anything to Rey. Of course, this was way near the beginning of the development process, prior to when they knew Chirrut would be in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
It’s an interesting idea, to say the least. But what do you think? Would you have liked to see Luke Skywalker as a blind Jedi? Let us know your thoughts down below!
