Star Wars: The Last Jedi rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way in a few different aspects. From the subplot on Canto Bight to its treatment of the questions asked in The Force Awakens, nothing was handled as many had hoped. But one big concern revolved around the character of Luke Skywalker.
Rather than being the altruistic Light Sided hero we grew to love in the original trilogy, this new take was dark, moody, bitter, and confused. Even Luke Hamill famously stated that he fundamentally disagreed with this direction of the character.
Speaking at SXSW following the premiere of the feature documentary The Director and the Jedi (which is now currently available to watch with the digital release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Johnson discussed how this attitude is common in filmmaking.

“In the context of how this has all been framed, you have to snap your head back and remember that with every single movie, with characters, it’s always a dialogue between the director and actors. That’s a healthy thing. You always butt heads with actors.”
Ironically enough, this isn’t the only Star Wars film Hamill has had problems with in the past. Hamill mentioned that he pretty much had the exact opposite problem with Luke in Return of the Jedi.
“I read [the script for] Jedi and thought, ‘Wait a sec! I thought I was heading toward the struggle of heading to the Dark Side. I’m in black. I have a glove. I see a trend here.'”
Well, that trend sort of approached that direction eventually, right? What do you think of Hamill’s thoughts? Let us know your thoughts down below!
