Natalie Portman Open To Star Wars Return If Asked – Surely Not?

In a recent interview Natalie Portman says she’s open to a Star Wars return, but has never been asked. However, surely that ship has sailed as far as Portman is concerned? Portman’s character is obviously stone cold dead in the timeline after Revenge of the Sith. However, that certainly hasn’t stopped Ewan McGregor or Hayden Christensen from returning.

The problem for me would be that the place I may have expected to see Portman make a small cameo would have been in Obi-Wan Kenobi. For example, a flashback scene to before Padme’s death in childbirth when Obi-Wan is reminiscing.

Here is what Portman said she she spoke with GQ magazine recently.

“I have no information on this,” Portman said when a fan floated the idea of her coming back to the franchise. “No one’s ever asked me to return, but I’m open to it.”

For me it’s one of those situations where, if they’re gonna do it, do it soon whilst Portman (does she age?) looks so young. However, at the same time, what is the point? Unless you are making some emotional connection to either Luke or Leia, then what purpose could it have? Maybe if they made a Darth Vader series, we could see inside Anakin’s thoughts and have Portman appear that way. However as yet, there appears to be no plans for such a show. That’s also something they’ve done already in the Vader comics. Ergo, do we really ever need to see Padme back?

I mean, was Padme a popular character from the prequels? I know I’m not a prequel fan, but even still, Padme’s role is hardly an exciting one in the prequels. We are talking about a character who fell in love with a creepy stalker. Also, the moment that cemented her love was him confessing his slaughtering of Tusken children. As a romance, the Padme and Anakin relationship never worked and it was a major reason for the prequels to feel clunky.

All in all, it’s coll Portman would return if asked. However, outside of a cameo in someone’s dreams, I can’t see the benefit of it.

What do you think of her comments as Natalie Portman says she’s open to a Star Wars return, but has never been asked. Do you agree with me that this ship has sailed and bringing Padme back would add little? As always, leave us your own thoughts below.
