New Star Wars Trilogy In Development From Simon Kinberg – Here We Go Again

Some pretty big news broke late yesterday (for me), a new Star Wars trilogy is in development from Simon Kinberg. Deadline reports that Kinberg has signed a deal to develop a trilogy of movies as writer/producer. Assumingly then no script has yet been written and this deal has been struck on the strength of Kinberg’s pitch for the trilogy. Which kinda just adds another layer to the in-development movies Lucasfilm have announced that have never happened.

I guess Lucasfilm are not announcing this one, it’s a trade leak. However, lets take a look at all the in-development films we know of. Rey Sequel from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which currently has an idea but no script and no writer. We have the James Mangold Dawn of the Jedi movie which he is developing. Far as we know Taika Waititi is still developing a Star Wars film. Though, to be fair I think that’s quietly been canned. Shawn Levy is currently developing his Star Wars movie also. Then, finally, we have Rian Johnson’s supposed trilogy which looks increasingly unlikely to ever even make it to a word on a page.

We can add onto these various announcements which were then canned as well. The trilogy from Benioff and Weiss and Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins. None have ever managed a single day of filming yet, save The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was most likely a rework of the already written Season 4 of The Mandalorian.

The Report

Here’s what Deadline reports;

‘Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a trilogy of Star Wars films. Kinberg will write the trio and produce them with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy.’

‘I heard this will comprise Episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s 1977 first film, which, along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, reshaped the global blockbuster game. Insiders disputed my intel that Kinberg will continue that storyline, saying this instead will begin a new saga, and sit alongside percolating Star Wars projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover. As usual, Lucasfilm and Disney are not commenting.’

If this is 10-12, then I give up, the last trilogy ruined the first 6 episodes by demeaning all their character arcs and conclusions. Are we going to bring back Palpatine again? It’s definitely time to start a new trilogy in the future or the past, preferably the distant future. I’d also question what possible place the Obaid-Chinoy Rey sequel could have if this were going to be 10-12? Surely that movie is the first step of what happened next? Maybe Kinberg’s trilogy could happen some years after that movie, I dunno?

I guess we’ll see, but I’ll only believe any Star Wars film is really happening when the cameras roll for day one of filming. As for Kinberg as a writer? well, he had two tries to get the Dark Phoenix story right for the X-Men movies and he failed both. His work is hardly a series if what I’d call well written movies. The best one he was involved with for me was X-Men: First Class. However, most I don’t care for. Kinberg has worked on Star Wars before and was a part of the team that developed Rebels initially.

What do you think of this news that a new Star Wars trilogy is in development from Simon Kinberg? Thoughts below as always, are you ready for another trilogy to be in development?
