Pacific Rim Uprising Director Wants Film To Launch Cinematic Universe

You can’t fault Hollywood for being ambitious. Ever since Marvel broke new ground with their Cinematic Universe, others have been working hard to replicate the very thing. Additionally, there are filmmakers who have always dreamed of creating bigger worlds in the film medium, who are all of a sudden seeing an opening to do so.

This same thing can be said of Steven S. DeKnight. The filmmaker, who helmed upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising, hopes to see bigger things for the franchise, should this film succeed.

Here’s what the director had to say when talking to Nerdist:

“I’m certainly hoping so. I think you’ll definitely probably get more comics. The plan was always to use this movie as a launching pad. If enough people show up to this, we’ve already talked about the plot of the third movie, and how the end of the third movie would expand the universe to a Star Wars/Star Trek-style [franchise] where you can go in many, many different directions. You can go main canon, you can go spin-offs, you can go one-offs. Yeah, that’s the plan. And I would love to see an animated TV show based on this.”

What do you think? Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of the cinematic universe aspect of Pacific Rim. I was one of the few people who thought the first one was hot garbage, and had little interest of diving back in — until I saw the recent Pacific Rim Uprising trailer, that is. But no matter my doubts, there’s no denying that it’s a world that’s ripe for exploration.

Pacific Rim Uprising hits theaters on February 23, 2017.
